Three Ways To Deal With Your Food When Your Refrigerator Breaks Down

Few things inside your home will make you panic in the same way as a refrigerator that breaks down, especially if you don't have a second fridge to temporarily store your food. While this experience isn't exactly pleasant, you can ease your mind by calling a reputable appliance service company to come and assess the problem. Soon enough, your fridge will be healthily humming away again, but in the meantime, it's your priority to keep your food from spoiling. Try as you might, you probably won't be able to eat everything in the fridge, which means you're faced with the task of dealing with it in a finite amount of time. Not sure what to do? Freeze What You Can

Not all the items in your fridge are conducive to being frozen, but many things will fare well in the freezer. Look for the items that you believe can handle a cooler temperature and load them in your deep freeze. Meat, cheese, bread and even milk can all survive a stint in the freezer. Many condiments can freeze satisfactorily, but make sure the bottles aren't too full. If they're nearly full, the content can expand and crack the bottle during the freezing process.

Give Food Away

Now's the time to get into the good graces of your neighbors. Identify the food that you can't freeze and that won't last long at room temperature and visit your neighbors to ask if you can give the food away. While some fruits and vegetables will last for a short while at room temperature, don't risk the food spoiling and going to waste. Giving some yogurt cups to a neighbor for her kids or some lettuce to help make a salad for dinner can help both of you. You can also consider making a quick run to your local food bank. While food banks primarily focus on non-perishable items, call to ask if there's a need for what you have.

Arrange A Get-Together

Throwing a party might be the last thing on your mind when your fridge breaks down, but having a number of mouths to feed is one of the best ways to get through your food without it wasting. Although you might have to buy a few extra items at the grocery store, think of a simple meal that you can prepare using most of what you have. Just don't make enough food that you'll have leftovers -- you won't have anywhere to store the extra dishes.
